Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals are three key user experience metrics defined by Google that quantify a web page's loading speed, responsiveness, and visual stability.

Why It Matters

Core Web Vitals are an official search ranking factor included in Google's Page Experience algorithm. According to 2025–2026 industry analysis, they account for roughly 10–15% of overall ranking signals. For highly competitive keywords, sites that meet all three metrics have reported an 8–15% improvement in search visibility. Conversely, according to 2025 Web Almanac data, only about 48% of mobile pages and 56% of desktop pages pass all three thresholds, meaning Core Web Vitals optimization represents a real opportunity to gain a competitive edge.

The Three Core Metrics

LCP (Largest Contentful Paint), Loading Performance

Measures the time it takes for the page's primary content (the largest image or text block) to render on screen.

INP (Interaction to Next Paint), Responsiveness

Measures the delay between a user interaction (click, tap, keyboard input, etc.) and when the screen actually updates. INP officially replaced FID (First Input Delay) as a Core Web Vital in March 2024, evaluating responsiveness across the entire page lifecycle rather than just the first input.

CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift), Visual Stability

Measures the degree to which the layout unexpectedly shifts during page load. Common causes of high CLS scores include ads or images loading late and pushing button positions around.

All three metrics must meet the "Good" threshold for at least 75% of page visits to be considered as passing the Core Web Vitals assessment. The three-metric lineup has remained unchanged since INP's introduction in March 2024; soft navigation measurement for SPAs entered an origin trial in Chrome 147 in March 2026 but is not yet a Core Web Vital.

Optimization Methods

Improving LCP

  • Add the fetchpriority="high" attribute to the LCP target image and preload it with <link rel="preload">.
  • Use next-generation image formats such as WebP and AVIF to reduce file sizes.
  • Leverage a CDN (Content Delivery Network) to reduce server response time (TTFB).
  • Implement server-side caching and optimize database queries.

Improving INP

  • Defer non-essential JavaScript that blocks the main thread using defer or async.
  • Break long tasks into smaller units so the browser can respond to user input more quickly.
  • Remove unnecessary third-party scripts or delay their load timing.

Improving CLS

  • Specify width and height attributes on image and video elements so the browser can reserve space in advance.
  • Use font-display: swap together with <link rel="preload"> for web font loading to prevent layout shifts.
  • Avoid dynamically injecting banners or ads above existing content.

Field data reflects actual visitor environments and is the data directly used for Google search rankings. Lab data consists of measurements taken in controlled environments and is useful for diagnostics and debugging. Using both types together is the most effective approach.
